Custom, New and Vintage/Used Mouthpieces

Unless otherwise noted, or by request with any special order, all mouthpieces are individually playtested, and every effort is made to accurately & usefully describe them here.  Please feel welcome to write and discuss what piece would be best for you and your musical intentions & needs.  Every retail mouthpiece Just Saxes stocks is offered in an effort to address some particular musical or saxophonic situation, so if you are after a particular kind of response -- whether musically or from a particular horn (matchwise) -- by all means please feel welcome to write in detail regarding your needs & search.  Often, there is not time to list pieces here before they are claimed, so if what you are looking for is not listed here, it may yet be "in house."

~ Many Thanks! ~

***Please note:  mouthpiece stocks are a bit low at the moment, as it has been a busy holiday season and I have not had much time to spend shopping for more mouthpieces.  I will be working on this in the coming months.

New!

Peter Ponzol mouthpieces for Tenor and Alto:
Tenor:

- II-V-I (.110 only) -

Dark piece with beautiful, open response throughout, most noticeable in RH 8va where players always seem to be seeking that extra bit of openness & expressiveness.  These pieces pieces, play  extremely evenly, both in intonation & timbre.  These really are simply great pieces, like great vintage Links, except with greater projection, note intensity, and much cleaner articulation.

- M2 (.120 only) -
The evenness of response, & intonational accuracy of the II-V-I in a higher baffled piece, with greater cut & projection.  A seriously powerful, yet very  controllable metal mouthpiece.  Capable of the full spectrum of response, soft & lush to loud, brash & unabashed.  Great modern tenor piece.

Alto:
"Traditional" (Hard rubber, .075 tip opening)
Probably the single biggest bang for the buck in a professional quality alto mouthpiece that is yet manageable for a beginner to pick up in a sizing that can last through advanced studies. Larger sizings available by special order.
(1 in stock now)

Select  custom mouthpieces:

Custom "New/Vintage" Mouthpieces:

Vintage Otto Link seekers now have an affordable alternative to the increasingly high prices of vintage examples.  The "Just Saxes 'Chu'" is a custom made piece, in tip sizing .108 (feels like a Link 8 or 8*), whose design is based on a one-of-a-kind, very custom, rare-vintage Link from my private collection.  Cast in ebonite, the Just Saxes "Chu" is completely hand-made by Ed Pillinger (London), and plays with unique power, projection, flexibility and resonance -- everything vintage Link lovers ask of the best Links.  Altissimo response exceptionally good, especially for a very large chambered piece.  Reviews from professional players and vintage saxophone lovers have been very, very positive.

These pieces play like a cross between a NY Tonemaster and a SuperToneMaster from the Florida era, with a true rollover baffle, medium facing, and an absolutely gigantic chamber.  These pieces play extremely well on vintage Conn especially, but are a good match to almost any horn.  While a "Chu Berry" or "10M" Conn tenor may make enormous intonational gains with a JS "Chu" mouthpiece, a Mark VI can gain a roundness and warmth in the bottom end than can be very difficult to coax from the same horn with other pieces.  They are not the loudest pieces you will find, but for a rich vintage sound, and for vintage horn enthusiasts, they are likely to please.

The main difference between bronzite and ebonite, aside from the bronzite being available in a larger opening size (.123), is that the ebonite tends to bring out the bottom partials in a horn, and to produce a wider, warmer bottom end; the bronzite tends to act more like a metal piece, bringing out more of the middle and upper partials in the sound, and giving a bit more projection.

Please note, update 12.28.03:  I've decided to discontinue these pieces, as I am no longer playing one myself, after changing necks on my own (custom) tenor.  I am not going to carry a line of products under my company name without actually using one primarily myself -- and it is a bit of a hassle to promote a mouthpiece line, for not much reward -- so I am going to discontinue these pieces.  They truly are great pieces, especially for people with Conns who are looking for a solution to intonational woes & frustrations.  I have one .108 remaining, and one .123; these are the last two examples available of these mpc lines.  They are not "leftovers" - they're pieces I had been saving.

Sorry:

Vintage and Used Mouthpieces

TENOR

Vintage Brilhart Ebolin
Serial no. 24,6xx

Flawlessly clean, original facing.  Very nice player, good sized medium (about like a Link 7 or 7*) tip opening.  Nice player, even up and down the instrument.  Deep, zesty Brilhart sound.

$165

Vandoren Java T97 (black)

New, playtested only.

Very nice piece.  Medium baffle - not high but not Link-like low either.  Very much professional quality response, toward the darker, more legit side, for a Vandoren T97.  In my teacher's words, "That's a real mouthpiece."

$85

Vintage Late Florida / Early Babbitt
Otto Link Metal "Super" Tone-Master
This very well-preserved 8* STM is the model with the "jean pattern" machining marks on the table and roll-over baffle.  It has the trademark bite (focus and edge) and projection of its vintage, and exceptionally responsive, easy low note response; it subtones in the bell tones more readily and easily than my .110 Ponzol II-V-I, and as a Ponzol dealer, my II-V-I responds well down low even compared to other II-V-I's.

I have discussed this piece with one of the best known experts on vintage Otto Link mouthpieces, as originally I was confused by the total absence of any gold plating on the piece, but he assured me it is normal and that all indications (from shared photos) are that the finish is the original rhodium.  The condition of the table's machining marks is as it should be, and undisturbed, also pointing at original condition.  Additionally, the piece plays very much as it should, as an 8* sizing, and feels to me a half size too big for me, which is the way it should feel as an 8*.

The box, ligature and cap all seem to be original (this piece was acquired in trade, so I can only go by appearances), and are included.  The ligature works exceptionally well for an original Link ligature, and this tends to argue for its being of proper vintage (more modern ligatures often do not fit as perfectly, or tighten as cleanly).

I would NOT recommend this piece for beginning or intermediate players who are not accustomed to large opening pieces.  I am very comfortable on a .110, but the extra half sizing is a struggle for me.  I have had this piece playtested by professional players with strong chops, and it has performed very, very nicely for all.  This piece is an especially good match to vintage Selmer Mark VI's, based on playtest experiences of myself and others.

(photos to come)

$795

Claude Lakey HR 7*3 / 3

Exceptionally good player with full, powerful voice.  Roughly average controllability for a Lakey - great for the right player, a challenge for a player who needs a more controllable piece.  Can make some horns sound good, though, that other pieces don't seem to match.

Cosmetically very good-excellent. Ligature incl.

$75

Herb Couf "Special" 3*

This example is in good condition, but does have a small nick at the upper left corner of the table (please see photos).  I have playtested this piece, though, and it does not seem to show any signs of wanting to chirp as a consequence.

These are surpringly nice playing stock pieces, with some edge and volume to them.  The opening is medium.

These mouthpieces actually play well, but they are bright.

ALTO

Johannes Gerber Custom Metal Dukoff
(large tip opening, unmeasured)

This is a screamer.  One of Johannes's trademark, souped-up Dukoffs, this is piece is loud, accurate, and powerful.  If you're looking for one of these, you already know what it is, this is it, and you will not be disappointed.  If not, it's a piece with a fairly large opening, high baffle, that can take everything you can give it, with unique cut, edge, core and projection.  It is NOT a "6" sizing, it's considerably larger, somewhere between an 8* and a 9, I believe.

sold - thank you, K!

Meyer "Limited Edition New York"
Refacing by Johannes Gerber
This is another of the batch of pieces I sent to Johannes years ago, and that have been in climate-controlled storage.  I can no longer recall how it happened -- maybe I let the wrong person playtest it, I don't know -- but it has a few toot scratches, surface only but they're present, and a small area of ligature marks, despite (I believe) being new when I sent it to Jo.

This custom piece has a large, round chamber, and the opening feels like at least a .078 -- it's a piece for a player with some chops, seeking a Meyer with a big bottom end, that really feels like hardrubber both physically and sonically -- without that buzziness (bad kind of buzziness) of modern Meyers -- and who can put some air in the horn.  It's still controlled and even with less air, but it doesn't become the ringing, loud, full-bodied piece it wants to be until it's pressured.  This is a considerably more powerful, louder piece than modern Meyers, yet even and controlled, round and dark, thanks to the piece's design and Johannes's fine tuning of the tip rail and side rails.

"Meyer Limited Edition" stock cap, Meyer ligature, and original box included.

Vintage Hardrubber Brilhart
refaced by Johannes Gerber

Vintage (real) hardrubber Brilhart, cleaned up and refaced by Johannes Gerber.  Nice and even, throughout the range, quick and even altissimo response, subtones readily.  Very nice vintage Brilhart with Jo's excellent work.

sold - thank you, J!

Charles Bay "NW"
7 opening
("New old stock")

Tip opening unmeasured, but this is a piece for someone seeking something larger than a .075-.078, and some resistance.  It's round, dark, even, and very accurate intonationally, an exceptional piece for a technical player, but definitely not ideal for a student or any one who likes a "soft" set-up; it's a piece that is probably best suited to a professional playing mostly "legit" with strong chops.  For some reason, this piece plays exceptionally well and in perfect tune with Martin Handcraft altos, horns that are often difficult to match to mouthpieces.  It is very, very good on vintage American altos in general.  I have been keeping this piece for myself for several years, in case I should find a Martin Handcraft I just couldn't sell, and just never found that Handcraft.  It was purchased new in 2001 or 2002 in a group purchase of Bay pieces from a professional saxophonist who was a friend of Bay's.  It is mouthpiece of exceptionally fine quality.  Bright and edgy - no; controlled, round and dark - yes.

$245 - on eBay now

Vintage Selmer Soloist Style, C
Refaced by Johannes Gerber

Horseshoe chamber.  Very clean.  Outstanding piece after JVW's old revamped Soloists.  On most saxophones -- not all, but most -- this is the best mouthpiece in the house for jazz saxophonists.

sold - thank you, DRP!

Vintage Steve Broadus "Perfected Model,"
refaced by Johannes Gerber

This Broadus piece was refaced to a medium, professional tip opening, about .068-.072 (unmeasured), and has been in temperature controlled storage for a few years.  I asked Jo to reface this piece to retain its original qualities, and it's a mellow, dark, lyrical piece with great control.  It is probably best suited to acoustic settings and section work, much more in the Paul Desmond vein, somewhere between a vintage Link and a vintage Brilhard Ebolin (minus the Brilhart edge).  This piece is about finesse, and fineness and evenness of response.  The facing has a couple of light nicks in its surface, but neither of them traverse the entire rail, and the piece does not chirp.

sold - thank you, T.P.!

Otto Link Metal for Alto,
Refaced by Johannes Gerber

I had the shaft of this piece shortened, to make it compatible with vintage Conn altos, and the microtuner (normally the shaft prevents the chamber from being pushed far enough on to the microtuner barrel to play properly in tune on "Chu" era and most 6M altos.  The shortened shaft, of course does not affect the tuning on normal necks, as that part of the shaft is not part of the mouthpiece chamber.

Refaced by Johannes Gerber in 2005 or 2006, I have been holding onto this piece in case just the right "Chu" alto should come along, making me wish I had it back.  The facing is nice & clean, and roughly a .077.

$245

Custom Meyer, refaced by Will Grizzle

It's been years since I had a chance to play this piece, and before rescuing it from safe storage.  Refaced by Will Grizzle, I remember it as having a medium opening (.075 or thereabouts).

Grizzle is a much sought after saxophone and mouthpiece specialist in Georgia.

I'll update this listing when I have a chance to play this piece again.

sold

Johannes Gerber custom Meyer "G"

The Meyer "G" is a larger chambered off-the-shelf piece brought out by Meyer to answer players' interest in vintage mouthpieces.  Johannes Gerber customized this to give it a true rollover baffle, and to make it play evenly up and down the range of the instrument, with the trademark ease of subtone and speech in the bottom end, and evenness in the high notes.

This piece is dark, round, and sweet, in the vein of vintage Links, something like a Steve Broadus with more volume and power.

sold - thank you, DRP!

Ralph Morgan Hardrubber 7M

I have had this piece for 4 or 5 years, dating back to when I carried Morgan pieces for sale with alto purchases because I felt they were the best of the off-the-shelf pieces -- dependable, well made, about as good as it could get in 2004 for less than 250.  Appreciated as such at the end of Morgan's career, appreciation for these pieces has only grown since his passing.  Unlike most modern off-the-shelf pieces, these will likely continue to appreciate in value over time, much like Links and Meyers of the pre-modern era.

Of the dozen odd pieces of his I carried from 2001-2005, this is the one I held onto.

It has not been played much, but (in safe storage) it has inherited a bit of a shadow from the toothguard.  The pictures tell the story.  It is a typical Morgan "Jazz" piece for alto, just a little better than the others that came through my shop.

sold - thank you, A!

Peter Ponzol Hard Rubber .080
New condition

This is an older ("new, old stock") Ponzol piece, and a great, professional quality mouthpiece, especially at the price.  It's been in storage a few years, in a climate controlled storage locker.  Response and intonation are very even, and it plays like a cross between a good Link and a good Meyer.  It's difficult, if not impossible, to find off-the-shelf pieces in this price range that play as well, or as evenly.  Power-wise, it's about the same as a good, vintage Brilhart Eboline.  Opening .075.

$95

Brilhart Personaline for alto, Refacing by Johannes Gerber (to roughly .075)
Very good condition, just returned from new "clean-up" refacing by Johannes Gerber.  Very nice playing piece with strong, intense core, that can take a good amount of air.  Even scale, beautiful work.
sold - thank you, K!

Vintage Vandoren A95 Java (BLUE) for alto

Very nice example of these out-of-production pieces, in excellent condition.  Some light tooth scratching in two spots on the beak (please see photos), but otherwise very nice cosmetically.  Plays extremely well.  Fans of the good Selmer scroll shank pieces for alto will likely find this piece to their taste.

Claude Lakey 7*3 for alto

Loud & powerful, older Lakey.  Good condition, with flaw in the front area of bite plate - not sure if it's a manufacturing flaw or from use.  This piece plays well, and loudly.  It was previously partnered to an goldplated SML, and was previously owned by a professional player and instructor.  Obtained in purchase of the SML.

sold - thank you, CH!

Ralph Morgan "Vintage Model" (NEW)
serial # 7018, size 6

These are pieces from a more Linklike template than Morgan's usual more Meyer-like designs.  They have a lower baffle than the Jazz or Excalibur line, and a very large, round chamber.  They will play nicely in tune on older American altos, and can lend bottom end and body - darkness - to French and modern makes.

This piece is new, and has not yet been playtested.

sold

Vintage Woodwind "Educator" for alto
Suprisingly good response for stock vintage piece, & despite chipped corner.  Even & freeblowing.  Good back up as is, potentially very nice performer with customizing.  Good match to vintage Conn, Martin, Buescher.
Recycling this one, more or less.  Several other stock vintage pieces are available some of vintage hard rubber, that are available at $25 each.  This Woodwind piece is the best of the stock pieces on hand.

$40

New!
Custom (New) Meyer mouthpieces by Johannes Gerber

Following Jon Van Wie's passing, I have been searching for another mouthpiece specialist able to transform modern Meyers to play more like vintage Meyers - like professional quality mouthpieces for alto, real mouthpieces.  Johannes's craftsmanship is of the very highest, finest quality, and I have been very lucky to be able to send some Meyer blanks to Johannes for him to work his own magic on them.  I'm very happy with these pieces.  The concept is very similar to that of Jon's Meyers - no accident, since Johannes readily acknowledges his intellectual and personal debt to Jon, and their correspondences.  These "vintage-ized" Meyers have an extremely fine, and finely worked tip rail for very sensitive articulation and response, but with a nice open throat and larger chamber than modern Meyers, giving them a little more of a laid back feel.  I am still in the process of getting to know these new pieces, but my first impression is that this is the standout quality of the pieces, at least for me; the way that they invite a warm, slower airstream, and a more laid back approach.  They still respond when pushed, and will accept pressure from the player, but they play a bit less hotly than Jon's fine work.  They are excellent pieces and a nice price for a truly professional level piece.

update 5/01/2010 A new shipment of pieces is off to Johannes for his magic touch.  Stay tuned for more info and updates, and please feel welcome to inquire.
