Some Notes on Using These Lists

Users are well-advised to treat these serial number lists as less than literal, although their content should conform with that provided in most serial number lists (since it originates from the same sources).  Most serial number lists, and sources of information on serial numbers, represent only approximations of actual serial-number-to-date-of-manufacture histories.  That's to say, despite that serial number lists are usually presented as definite, or absolute, about half are likely to be, or to include, "rear-window" projections; this is observable to even a casual observer, in some cases, as a strikingly too-neat procession of manufacturing totals.  In some examples more than others, the march of numbers just doesn't mirror the chaos inherent in actual history, markets, and workplace events.

Whether approximated by more contemporary versions of older factories, or by historians, or by hobbyists, lists are probably accurate enough for casual purposes (i.e. those of players, wondering roughly how old their horn is).  Surely not many are off by more than a year or two in their attributions or implications; probably all at least enable their users to approximate age to within one to five years.  More rigorous inquirants, though, should dig a bit deeper, and cross reference these rough-and-ready documents against primary sources to produce more firmly-footed correlations.  These serial lists attribute year/serial-number relationships with only relatively specific accuracy.

Most serial number lists, numerically speaking, tend to become more chaotic beginning in the 1970s (e.g. King's).  One would guess this would be reflective of actual (not to mention more accurate) records being kept during these years, and the greater likelihood of surviving, and accessible, "hard" documentation.

BUESCHER

The best internet source of serial number information for Buescher saxophones is to be found on Lars Kirmser's site (www.musictrader.com).  Most internet serial number charts seem to be lifted from Allied Supply company's catalog, and include only number/year relations in 5 year increments, for Buescher.  Kirmser's includes annual attributions, and I've cross-referenced his lists against Allied Supply's annual documentation (Allied's information does correspond to Kirmser's, in the overlapping numbers).

Rather than reprint from Kirmser's page, here, and take credit from where it's due, I'd encourage you to visit MusicTrader.com directly:

Allied's numbers for Buescher & Bundy (does not include "Bundy Special" whose serial #'s seem to correspond with 1960s Keilwerth series) are:
